Tips for Staying Safe this Labor Day Weekend

1.  If you are going to be driving long distance, take turns behind the wheel.

Driving long distances by yourself increases the chances that you are going to be too tired to be fully alert while driving.  Make sure to take turns with someone else to reduce your risk of having an accident on your way to have fun this weekend.

2.  Bring plenty of water if you’re going to be enjoying Arkansas’ great outdoors.

September in Arkansas still plenty hot so make sure you’re prepared by bringing enough water.  Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are serious problems and can even be fatal.

3.  Make sure to have a designated driver

Whether you’re in a car headed to go camping or out on the lake, make sure to have a designated driver behind the wheel.  Alcohol impaired driving not only puts you at risk of getting a DUI, it also drastically increases your risk of having an accident which would lead to injury or death.

4.  Pay attention to boating safety regulations.

Check to make sure your boat is compliant with all relevant boating safety laws.  These include, but are not limited to, having one lifejacket per person and insuring that your vessel has proper lighting.  Also, make sure to be safe when towing people for skiing or tubing and always have someone helping the driver monitor the person being towed.

5.  Make sure your boat is registered with your insurance provider.

As with cars, boats with engines over 50 horsepower are required to have at least $50,000 in liability coverage per occurrence in Arkansas.  It is illegal to operate a boat without having liability insurance and proof of insurance.  Check with your provider to make sure your boat is covered by your policy.
